If you are ever visiting Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome, a good place for a pint is the Prince of Wales PH in the village. It has an intersting history and there are a few RFC/RAF bits amongst the decor....

Stow Maries parish church (St. Mary and St. Margaret) up on the hill is topped by an unlikely red neon cross, donated in 1925 by Claude Ridley, commanding officer (from 1916) of the nearby R.F.C. aerodrome. The light of Ridley’s Beacon shines down on the Prince of Wales. The Pond family initially set up a bakery there in the early 1830s. James Pond was the baker, but his enterprising son, Edward, then started selling beer. We know that a Samuel Pond was landlord in the 1890s, Henry French in 1900...

When l read the title of your thread l thought it was going to be about THE Prince of Wales, who we know was no stranger to a flight or two , such as in Bristol Fighters in Italy .

I once flicked through his autobiography and the only aviation reference l found was that he went up once post-war with Billy Mitchell.
