Amongst the GW related graves and memorials in Maldon's Cemetery is an inclusion on the Wright family grave at position 41.97.

It is to one Alfred FLOWER, a Sergeant (483) in the Royal Air Force, who first served with the Royal Flying Corps from the 12/8/1914.

He was the husband of Mrs. A. Flower of 197 High Street, Maldon and died 16/12/1918.

Anyone know anything about his story?

Best regards.

Stephen (Maldon).

Looks like in 1912 he was an Air Mechanic 2nd. Class. Born in Bath in 1894, he married Lily Wright (of Maldon) in 1917 and actually died of influenza. What I can't work out is where he was stationed and what he was doing in 1918?

Hi Stephen, Just checked his medal index card and he was issued with a 1914 Star trio no mention of a clasp, with him dying of influenza in December 1918 he wouldn't have been able to put in a claim for it.  He was with 4 Squadron in France from August 1914 therefore there is a good  chance he would have qualified for the clasp. Stephen: RFC and RAF men's records can be found on FMP.  They're only ever 2 pages, though.

One option, as you know his number, is to have a look here:  Welcome to RAF Museum Storyvault - RAF Museum Storyvault
