Hello all,

I have the service record for James Potts, and whilst I have the dates and vessels they were aboard on, is there any further information you can take from these records?

From what I gathered, they spend the war period in the North Sea and East Africa?

Appreciate anyone's help or input!

His initial Wartime service was on HMS SEVERN, a Humber class coastal Monitor - info on her history at this link:   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Severn_(1914)#Citations

He then goes to HMS HARPENDEN appears to be 30 Apl 1918 (HMS Boadicea was her Depot ship, then replaced by Gunner & later Attentive).

AB (Able Seaman) J. T. Potts would have a 1914-15 star, British War & Victory medals plus the RN Long Service medal (27 Oct 1917)

HMS BOADICEA (more accurately BOADICEA II) was the Depot/Parent Ship of HARPENDEN when she was operating in the Irish Sea out of Kingstown, Ireland. HMS GUNNER became her base and parent while she was operating from Granton on the Firth of Forth. When she was moved south to operate in the Channel her base and parent was HMS ATTENTIVE III at Dover.

After demob in late May 1919 he remained in the Royal Fleet Reserve (RFR). Between April and July 1921 he was mobilised from the RFR to Devonport Barracks (HMS VIVID I) to be employed as part of the Government response to the national miners'/transport strike.

Thank you for your interpretation, I appreciate the help! Not sure what happened to his medals, but I will see if I can track down his direct ancestors!

Thank you for explaining that, the idea of parent ships is new to me!
