I am interested in  the  PITLOCHRY  born  MAJOR   James  Lawson  MITCHELL  , of the  Royal  Field  Artillery who it seems left the Perthshire town in  Scotland in 1901 to join the Army in the  RFA  coming out of   Royal Military  College ,  Woolwich in London   His father was a Lawyer in  the small town of Pitlochry Perthshire.  He is listed in the  DE  RUVIGNYS  ROLL OF HONOUR   book . He served 8 years in India and then  to war in  France in  1914 and seems in 1915 he won his  Flying Wings  with the  RFC but stayed in the  Artillery as he was given control of gun fire at the battle of  LA HOOGE and in July  1915 given the control of 112th Battery and was killed in action at  Ypres  on  16th March  1916 .and buried in a war grave in  Belgium.

He is on the war memorial at Pitlochry (main street ) and on the Pitlochry Parish Church and on the war memoriial  of  Ardvreck  School in  Crieff , Pethshire  and maybe on   Fettes college  war memorial in  Edinburgh if any one has a  Fettes  College roll of honour for WW1 .

I am interested in any  newspaper reports re   Major  Mitchell's service and death and if any one has a roll of honour for  Fettes  College  Edinburgh recording Major  Mitchell as a casualty of the war .

Any information would be great as i dont have access to newspaper reports

kind regards  patrick w anderson

Find My Past Newspapers has a number of articles relating to James. This is a small piece from 'The Scotsman' dated Tuesday, November 7, 1916 relating to the memorial in Pitlochry Parish Church.

Note that the press clipping says he qualified as an observer not a pilot.

A brief note here shows he was attached to the RFC from 111 Battery RFA and returned to the Battery 14/3/15.

thank you Jobbem, Gunner  87 and Charlie 962 for your excellent info .

do you think Major  Mitchell would be in action in the battles just prior to his death in action  as  the newspapers dont give much info on his actions  .

thank you all for your kindness

Read back through that Diary. Mitchell was OC the battery at the time of his death. You should see earlier mentions of him moving from 111 to 112 Battery.

Charlie 926  - Thank you for your info on the War diary  report for that date  of Major Mitchell's death in action and recording too the  OR who died of wounds that same day  i see  from Blackburn  , Lancs back then !

I was really interested to read the war diary and to see that Major  Mitchell had moved from  one battery to the other , 112 Battery

See  that Major  Mitchell is recorded as Captain  on the day he was KILLED IN ACTION and not Major or temp  Major rank ,

thats great thanks  makes the story even more interesting

best wishes  pat w anderson
