MarkP Posted 14 January Share Posted 14 January Can anyone give information on spotting original 1905 service caps? I've seen a lot of caps for sale that purport to be original and later war ones with stitching on the peak but to be honest, the majority seem to be in to good a condition to be original. From what little I know the lining was black oilskin and stamped in white with the size and WD crows foot. In some, the vent holes in the crown look to be painted almost the same colour as the leather straps and the under side of the peak being green. mark holden Posted 14 January Share Posted 14 January Hello Mark P, I recommend the Book Campaign 1914 by Chris Pollendine which has excellent photos of surviving original examples. A couple of tips the peaks on the pre WW1/ WW1 are shorter than the post war pattern there is no stitched seam to the top of the cap band on pre WW1/ WW1 caps. Again you will see this on post WW1 caps. regards Mark
