Remembered Today:

Contour Wood

In 1st/5th Cheshire Regiment War Diaries, I have come across a reference to CONTOUR WOOD.  I cannot confirm where that wood actually is.  The Regiment was in Fricourt on 6th September 1916, Contour Wood on 7th September 1916, and Leuze Wood on 8th September 1916.  Bearing this in mind, I suspect that Contour Wood may have been another name for Trones Wood, which is very much in the same area.  However, I cannot confirm this.  Can anyone help please?  Thank you.

Hi Gordon, welcome to the Forum.  It is here; Screenshot courtesy of https://maps.nls.uk/view/101465323

If you click on the link it will take you to a larger zoomable map. There are a lot of woods and copses in this area.

My pleasure Gordon.

McMaster is another online site for maps. Basically type in a name and see what shows up.

Sometimes you need to type in the name of a larger village in the area you are looking at.

Trench mapper is another site if you can get your head around it (I can't usually and so prefer these sites I have shared with you)

@Howard is a trench mapper expert, as is @WhiteStarLine. @brianmorris547 is a whizz with paper maps from the War Diaries (WD) and elsewhere.

Best of luck, Bob

Gordon

Welcome.

5 Cheshires were the Pioneer Bn of 56 Div. You can normally find maps in the War Diaries of the Infantry Brigade or Divisional HQ. This map showing Contour Wood in F 24 is from the September 1916 WD of 56 Div HQ General Staff. Fricourt and Mametz are shown to put it into perspective.

Leuze Wood is east of Guillemont which was attacked by 20 Div and 16 Div on 03/09/1916.

Hi Gordon and welcome to the forum.  For this and other queries you may have, you can try this:

Open TrenchMapper.

  1. In the Quick Search type in contour
  2. Select Contour Copse from the list of 2 items
