Phill BW Posted 10 January Share Posted 10 January Hi, researching CWGC headstones in Brockley and Ladywell Cemetery. Need a bit of advice. The headstone reads. E. W Yost Signalman. J/28166 H.M.T.B.D Worsley. But his Register of Service, Shows his last vessel as Diligence, his death at Victory shore base. could this be an error? horatio2 Posted 10 January Share Posted 10 January DILIGENCE was depot ship at Scapa Flow for destroyers of 12th Destroyer Flotilla, Grand Fleet, including HMS WOLSEY. His ADM 188 ledger record does not note a draft to WOLSEY and it looks as though he was still at Portsmouth, dying of 'flu, when he should have been joining WOLSEY at Scapa. It is possible that his move to DILIGENCE (WOLSEY) was overtaken by events and/or escaped the attention of the ledger clerks.

Keith_history_buff Posted 10 January Share Posted 10 January There is no entry in the England & Wales GRO death index for this time period.
Keith_history_buff Posted 11 January Share Posted 11 January There are some enigmatic details for him in BT 334/68 He died aboard HMHS Agadir, at 'Naval Base' at Scapa Flow, cause of death being 'Influenza & Broncho Pneumonia'. Two other fatalities also listed, same place, same cause of death are: 29 Nov 1918, Isaac Main, 40 years, HMS Zaria 1 Dec 1918, Thomas Henry, 17 years, HMS Ramada https://historicalrfa.uk/requisitioned-auxiliary-zaria/
Keith_history_buff Posted 11 January Share Posted 11 January Could it be that he was borne on the books of HMS Victory for pay and accounting purposes at the point where he was taken seriously ill, and transferred to the hospital ship? I've seen similar with soldiers who, upon being admitted to a hospital in the UK, are borne on the books of the regimental depot.

Many Thanks.

I think the above scenario is quite likely. He was, perhaps, slated for a draft to WOLSEY (at which point he should have moved to DILIGENCE List 12 - men serving in tenders) but fell ill while still in DILIGENCE and he was placed on the boooks of VICTORY when moved across to AGADIR.
