Remembered Today:

RFC Training Fatalties per 1000 per Month 1917

I have attached a Table that I have done to show RFC Training Fatalities in 1917. There were 338 RFC fatalities in 299 crashes in that year (RNAS deaths are not included). The data in the Table is drawn from www.rcawsey.co.uk and from Statistics of the Military Effort, p.501. Ideally, the real answer to fluctuating fatality rates would only be possible if there were data for the total number of flying hours put in by trainees per month (this would obviate the distortion caused by changing weather conditions each month).

Whatever the limitations of this Table, it shows that trainee deaths could not have been anywhere near the mythical 8000.

I also have an Excel file with data on the 338 RFC trainees killed in accidents in 1917 at home. If anyone is interested in seeing it, please contact me.
