alantwo Posted 21 December , 2023 Share Posted 21 December , 2023 I would appreciate help in interpreting the service record of 178808, Edgar William Daniels, National Archive ref: AIR 79/1614/178808 and AIR 76/121/171. His civilian occupation is described in the former as an Aero Engine Fitter, his rank in the latter appears to be Cadet. Daniels enlisted 17th June 1918 and transferred to RAF Reserve 23rd March 1919, but from the image below could someone explain what everything means in between. Cropped image via Find My Past. My thanks in advance for any advice. Alan

But not sure what the letters in brackets mean. No1 and No2 Fighting Schools are also in his record Charlie

HERITAGE PLUS Posted 24 December , 2023 Share Posted 24 December , 2023 The No 1 School of Aerial Gunnery was set up by Louis Strange in 1916 (he was a major at that time) at Hythe, Kent. When promoted to Lieutenant Colonel shortly after, Strange then established the No 2 School at Turnberry. Dave
alantwo Posted 24 December , 2023 Author Share Posted 24 December , 2023 Thanks Dave. Searching back through the Forum location has been discussed previously so I don’t think my theory about the bracketed letters and location holds water. There are different letters for the same school, perhaps it’s a role/specialisation or a department at the school? From the website airhistory.org.uk CDD in the above record represents Cadet Distribution Depot and RD Recruits/Recruiting Depot (later Reserve Depot).
