Remembered Today:

Rupert Brooke Memorial Plaque

Dust Jacket Collector

I see Rupert Brooke’s ‘Death Penny’, which was sent to his mother, has just sold at Spink’s for £21,000. Hope it went to a good home but I’m surprised it wasn’t already in a National collection.IMG_0862.png.f829bdbf50664d237e418eb65b8ecb9e.png

This was the subject of debate on X, people questioning why his middle name wasn’t on the plaque?

The plaque shows the form of his name as used by the Admiralty. [See p. 350 of Len Sellers magazine 'R.N.D.' issue No.5, June 1998]  It is also the way his name was written on his ID disc.

Unfortunately the Admiralty was inconsistent. His ADM 339 RND record shows him as Rupert Chawner and (incorrectly) as Rupert Chaucer. His ADM 337 RNVR record shows just Rupert . His medals (1914 Star + 2) were listed in the RN Roll as Rupert C.but the 1914 Star Roll just shows R..

CWGC records him as Rupert Chawner.
