AidanR Posted 10 December , 2023 Share Posted 10 December , 2023 Hi, My family have this shell casing which has been passed down from my great great grandfather in WW1. He was English, so assume the same for the provenance of the shell. He was in the West Yorks Regiment and I believe at the Battle of Arras - he was definitely in France in 1917 as we know he had his foot blown off by a shell. The casing also has a hammered engraving at the top which as best as I can make out says ‘Vimy’ - which would also fit. I can make out the CF (Cordite Filled) I believe, and the only other identifiable marks I can see are: another F (refilled and used again?) K 14 15 3 an arrow and what looks like a year starting with 191… It’s around 1ft tall, wider at the base which is probably around 3-4 inches. I can get more specific measurements if that helps. Any information that can be gleaned from this would be most appreciated! Thanks in advance
peregrinvs Posted 11 December , 2023 Share Posted 11 December , 2023 It looks like a 13 or 18 Pounder cartridge case made in 1915. The exact diameter of the base would confirm which it is.
Spaceman Posted 11 December , 2023 Share Posted 11 December , 2023 Both the 13-pdr and 18-pdr cases were ~12 inches long with the difference being that the base diameter was ~3.5 inches for the former and 4.0 inches for the latter.
