Whitehouse Mounting

I believe this pre-dates the classic Scarff mounting, and I als believe its main use was on the Short 184 before supeceded by the Scarff mounting. The attached image is I believe a Whitehouse Mounting on a Short 184.

"I believe..." mainly because I can find no information on the design and operation of the mounting.

From its appearance in the photo it appears to be a ring mounting, with a raisable yoke for the gun, and I can make a guess (with many question marks) as to how it functioned. BUT...

Can anyone provide details, or a descriptions, drawings or photographs of the Whitehouse mounting?
