Scarcity of Princess Mary Cards

With no knowledge whatsoever of the relative market prices, I would tend to answer this with some statistical thinking.

1) Who exactly was the card issued to in 1914?

2) Who exactly was the card issued to in 1915?

3) What are the relative numbers issued in 1914/15?

4) Would we expect equal survival rates?

Regards,

Michel,

I don’t collect these tins, but that one and the card & photo seem to be in very good condition.

Were these issued in 1916/7/8?

Intended to be issued to everyone wearing the King’s uniform on Christmas Day 1914, it’s suggested 400,000 were distributed by then, but distribution continued until 1920 by which time 2.5 million had been issued.

From what I have seen in the past the 1915 card is more numerous.

Here's my tin, pencil and card. It also has the two packets and the Mary photo.

Peter Doyle wrote a very detailed book on the subject of the Princess Mary Gift it contains issue numbers and entitlement categories.

in summary every serviceman in uniform at Xmas 1914 received a form of the gift and a very small number of nurses serving in France who received chocolate. Indian Troops received spices. The contents varied. The pencil was a separate gift for non smokers but it is often assumed they formed part of the smokers gift. The brass box came in an outer cardboard box that contained the pipe and lighter.
