Craig T Posted 1 December , 2023 Share Posted 1 December , 2023 I have this "Trench art" 75mm German shell (AWS) dated 1909. I have no problem with the shell being genuine but the design on it looks strange for the following reasons. 1 The crown appears to be a queens crown and not a kings crown, as would be expected. 2 The eagle is single headed 3 the Script reads "World War 1914 - 1918" Should this not be "Great War"? Can anyone assist, please
peregrinvs Posted 1 December , 2023 Share Posted 1 December , 2023 Such items were mostly made after WWI by civilians for sale to battlefield tourists. I’d have thought the simplest explanation was that the creator of the engravings was someone for whom English wasn’t their first language and they weren’t familiar with the finer details of British heraldry. AOK4 Posted 1 December , 2023 Share Posted 1 December , 2023 Hello, It reminds me of the Prussian eagle as it could be found on the spiked helmets. However the crest in the middle doesn't ring a bell. Jan
Craig T Posted 1 December , 2023 Author Share Posted 1 December , 2023 Thanks for the reply. It's decorative enough, even if it's not a correct representation of anything.
