I'd be very grateful for a sight of the diary for the period 21st-25th September 1914, when 3RB were in the line at Soupir. I'm particularly interested in the attack on the 25th, in which the attached officer MK Mackenzie was killed.

Many thanks,

Shaun

Shaun,

The diaries copied from Kew are on A3 size paper, my scanner is not of A3 size unfortunately, so if acceptable I will transcribe it here for you in a while.

Richard,

Will dig out the Diary in a bit for you. His obituary from The Rifle Brigade is as follows:-

Lieutenant - Colonel R. Alexander

(Commanding Officer 3rd Battalion)

Reginald Alexander was the son of Captain Caledon du Pre Alexander, 1st Life Guards, of Auberies, Essex, and was born 6th September 1867 and was educated at Eton. Gazetted a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army from the West Kent Militia on 23rd January 1889 and was posted to The Rifle Brigade on 8th May of the same year. He became Lieutenant on 16th December 1891 and was promoted Captain on 19th July 1987. From 30th November 1894 to 12th November 1898 he was Adjutant of the 1st Battalion.

He served in the South African War 1899-1902 with the 2nd Battalion and took part in the operations in Natal (March - June 1900) and the action of Laings Nek (6th-9th June). He also took part in the operations east of Pretoria between July and 29th November and at the action of Belfast (Bergendal) on 27th August was severly wounded. He also served in the operations in the Transvaal between 30th November 1900 and 31st May 1902. He was Commandant of Uitkirk from 22nd July 1901 to 3rd September, when he was made Commandant at Olifants River, a post he held until 20th November 1901.

For his services during the War he was twice mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 10th September 1901 and 29th July 1902), he received the Queens Medal and two clasps and the Kings Medal with two clasps.

On 5th April 1905 he was promoted to Major and posted to the 4th Battalion and served with it in Egypt and India, and on 15th October 1913 he was promoted to Lieutenant - Colonel to command the 3rd Battalion. He embarked with it for France on 8th September 1914 and on 13th October received a shrapnel wound in the thigh and was sent back to England. He however rapidly recovered from his wound and on 16th November returned to the front. He was killed in action on 30th December. He was of a peculiarly cheery and jovial disposition and his loss was greatly felt by all ranks.
