michaeldr Posted 18 November , 2023 Share Posted 18 November , 2023 Remembered Today on the Great War Forum - 2nd Lieutenant Alexander Brough Dundee Evening Telegraph 25th November 1915 DUNDEE OFFICER KILLED AT THE DARDANELLES. Intimation has been received that Lieut. Alexander Brough, 12th Scottish Rifles, had fallen in action at the Dardanelles. Deceased was a son of Mr George B. Brough, the secretary of Dundee Royal Infirmary, and prior to enlisting was a student at University College, Dundee. He was educated at the Harris Academy, and afterwards graduated M.A. Deceased who was about 24 years of age, was recognised as one of the most promising students of his time. Lieut. Brough was well-known in athletic circles in Dundee and was a valuable member of Roincach Mhor. from https://www.greatwardundee.com/entry/brough-alex/ 2nd Lieutenant Alexander Brough was attached to the 6th (Service) Battalion, The York and Lancaster Regiment War Diary WO95/4299 – Jephson's Post - 17th November [note date] “2Lieut. A. Brough & 4 men killed, 6 men wounded whilst covering working parties strengthening new line” The next night (18th November) an unsuccessful attempt was made to establish a new post “at a place where the previous night we had several casualties.” The position of this proposed new post is given as “about 100 yards N.E. of Grouse Butt line” (the Grouse Butt line is elsewhere given as about 500yds in front of the main trench line 54-57) I therefore estimate that the action in which 2Lt Brough died took place in the north-eastern quarter of the map below. Please note that this map pre-dates the action in question here
