Remembered Today:

Information on blued Austrialian P1907

Good evening,

I have acquired an Australian P1907 here in the Netherlands. There isn't much left of the markings (because of the blueing?) There are some questions I wanna ask about this model.     rtHtef

-Is it legit? I'm not much of an expert on this bayonet, the blueing makes it look very new and modern.

-From sources I have seen under the shield there is supposed to be a year of production, mine doesn't have that "Lithgow" is places directly under the shield is that normal?

-How common is the Blueing proces on these bayonets?

-What is it worth?

The Australian bayonets were fully blued. This is correct. WW1 Lithgow bayonets often have only faintly impressed markings. Is this a genuine bayonet or a reproduction ? Not sure, the photos are not clear enough for me to give an opinion.

I have not seen an early Lithgow bayonet with such dark blueing still showing after 100 years but otherwise the markings all looks correct. The wood grips also seam to have the same straight light coloured timber as on mine.

Your bayonet was made in May 1920, (5 '20) and has similar markings to those on my bayonet which was made 4 ' 20. To know what they are worth, best to find a couple that have sold on eBay to get an idea.

I just checked my 1920 Lithgow example and the blueing on the blade is still mostly quiet dark blue.

Cheers

The pictures are such poor quality that it it hard to tell, but especially on the crossguard that looks more like the black paint applied to Indian reworks than bluing.
