Remembered Today:

Thiepval Memorial Closure

Paul Reed

Recommended Posts

I can't find anything on the CWGC website, but I understand the Thiepval Memorial will be closed to all access for up to six weeks from 25th April. This is so cleaning work on the memorial can take place.

As I understand it, it will not be possible to visit any names or the Anglo-French cemetery while the work takes place.

The Thiepval Centre is not affected.

I thought it was cleaned a couple of years ago.

Seems a difficult time of year to do it but I suppose that there is never a godd time.

Martin - yes, it was. However, this was only stage one of the project it seems. Apparently this is the next stage. I suspect they are getting the memorial ready for 2006?

Just as an update on this; I visited the memorial with a group last week, just after 5pm. There is a fence across the main entrance area of the memorial, with a section that is pulled back after 5pm allowing you access to the monument. There is some scaffolding, but we didn't have anything that obstructed views of the names.

This of course may change as the work progresses.
