brianmorris547 Posted 2 November , 2023 Share Posted 2 November , 2023 (edited) Ian By Ypres can you be more specific. Do you mean Sector C in the line south of Verbrandenmolen and near the Zwarteleen Salient. See this map of Verbrandenmolen from the April 1915 WD of 5 Div HQ General Staff. TNA/Ancestry WO 95/1512 and this sketch from the February 1915 WD of 2 West Riding (13 IB, 5 Div). TNA/Ancestry WO 95/1552 The sketch is upside down but is headed C Sector and shows trench numbers which you can see on the main map. Ian C Posted 2 November , 2023 Author Share Posted 2 November , 2023 Hi Brian Thanks for getting in touch. I'm trying to help a chap with regards to one of his ancestors, the chap was in the 2 Kings Own Scottish Borderers and appears to have been wounded on 4/3/15 and died the next day, a news report from around the time says he was buried at Zillebeke but he is now on the Menin Gate, as are several others of the battalion. I explained that the graves must have been lost later in the war and am just trying to find out where the battalion was on the day, the battalion war dairy simply says Ypres Sector C. Admin kenf48 Posted 2 November , 2023 Admin Share Posted 2 November , 2023 An extract from the 13th Infantry Brigade Diary dated 25th February states 'C Area from Trench 32 to the Railway" A further Op Order from the 28th February gives the deployment from the following night with 2 KOYLI directed to relieve 83rd Brigade in 'C Sector', "Advanced Coys of the 2/KOSB...will follow close in the rear of the 2 KOYLI..." (WO95/1548/4) The 2/KOSB relieved the 2 KOYLI on the 3rd, relief was always a hazardous time with men moving about providing targets for the artillery and snipers. Apparently troops moving into C and D sectors on the left of the Brigade front marched from Ypres by the Lille Gate (A and B by the Menin Gate). brianmorris547 Posted 2 November , 2023 Share Posted 2 November , 2023 So we are in the right place. Another map from the WD of 5 Div HQ GS cropped to show Trench 32 to the Railway. TNA/Ancestry WO 95/1512 Brian
