The short life of a French monument to the first British Expeditionary Force. According to this site - https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Britannia_(monument) it was dedicated 28 June, 1938 and destroyed on 1 July, 1940.
The French apparently picked the 2nd Bn. Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders as the first arrivals. I believe the dust cover of Ray Westlake's "British Battalions in France & Belgium has a photo of them disembarking at Boulogne. This rendition of the statue is from issue one of "The Great War...I Was There", courtesy of Vickers MG Collection & Research Association
Would anyone know what was inscribed on the monument?
