ShtLE303 Posted 26 October , 2023 Share Posted 26 October , 2023 Have had these photos for some years, they were found in a piece of antique furniture I bought. 10 in all, with stamps and descriptions on the backs. What exactly do I have here? More.
Jim Strawbridge Posted 27 October , 2023 Share Posted 27 October , 2023 I would guess that these are photographs taken by a war correspondent/photographer (probably not an Australian as the images would suggest !!) . The photographs would need to be officially censored to ensure that no secrets from them would be of interest to the enemy and then made available to the Press. FROGSMILE Posted 27 October , 2023 Share Posted 27 October , 2023 (edited) Official press photos provided by a central bureau working on behalf of the British government I think. A sort of British Reuters. I recall that such B&W photos were still being produced in Northern Ireland and other operational theatres in the 1960s, 70s and 80s. They invariably shared the common features of an “official photograph” ink stamp on the back, generally with an overwritten signature of sorts in ink. Plus on the back was always attached (usually glued) a separate slip of paper with the subject of the image typed on using an old fashioned manual type writer. This format never changed. It would be fantastic and much appreciated if you could be generous enough to scan and post here individually each of those photos please.
