Im trying to make sense of a map reference for a hill outside Monchy -le Preux, the reference is 0.2.d.8.5. im trying to pin point the hill because the the Royal Dublin Fusilers were ordered to assault it on the afternoon of the24th April 1917 where my Great uncle was killed. Many thanks .

I’m not an expert but I think this is the approximate place. Map courtesy of The Topography Of Armageddon. sheet 51b SW

I see that you’ve asked the question before, and received answers.

@Ernie, you sent your reply to the GWF admin team email address. What the numbers mean are (missing sheet 51b SW) then square O, sub square 2, 8 along and 5 up.

Just to reinforce what Michelle wrote, the first character you give for the reference is the letter "O", not the number Zero. This can be found on Map 51b.

Thus, the full reference is 51b.O.2.d.8

EDIT: That should have read

51b.O.2.d.8.5

As stated above, the full map reference is 51b.O.2.d.8.5.  (O not 0). Here is a map with trenches corrected to 4th April 1917.

In TrenchMapper, put the map ref in and click Convert. Then select maps in the left panel.
