Remembered Today:

Naval pilot in No 1 Sqn RFC

In the squadron history of No 1 Sqn RFC it is said that around May 1917 they had a Naval officer attached to them but that they posted him out "for cowardice".

Looking at various records l cannot identify the individual in question. There are no f/s/lt s in the records that I could see. Possibly the officer wasn't RNAS but R N Division so held an Army style rank , therefore doesn't show up easily.  Why would a naval pilot capable of flying scouts not be sent to a RNAS fighter squadron? Unless the Navy didn't want him for the same reason that No 1 didn't.?

Naval officers and ratings in the RND continued to hold naval rank. They did, however, wear naval and army rank badges in the BEF.

Appointing  of naval officers to the RFC was commonplace but without a hint of a name and date I do not think we can take this much further.
