nils d Posted 22 October , 2023 Share Posted 22 October , 2023 In the squadron history of No 1 Sqn RFC it is said that around May 1917 they had a Naval officer attached to them but that they posted him out "for cowardice". Looking at various records l cannot identify the individual in question. There are no f/s/lt s in the records that I could see. Possibly the officer wasn't RNAS but R N Division so held an Army style rank , therefore doesn't show up easily. Why would a naval pilot capable of flying scouts not be sent to a RNAS fighter squadron? Unless the Navy didn't want him for the same reason that No 1 didn't.? They did, however, wear naval and army rank badges in the BEF. Appointing of naval officers to the RFC was commonplace but without a hint of a name and date I do not think we can take this much further.
