4thGordons Posted 8 October , 2023 Share Posted 8 October , 2023 As part of a tidy up I am rediscovering/discovering things I had forgotten - including this cotton roll that looks like it probably contained tools or some such. It is stenciled and stamped but I am slightly dubious as to its originality (the cotton seems very new to me - it does not appear all that old (although it is stained.) I found a 1910 reference to J Parkyn and Co : Parkyn J. & Co. mnufrs. of Sheetings, longcloths. 70 Mosley Street, Manchester. It is approx. 24 cm (9in) wide x 44 cm (17") long and has 7 loops of material and a pocket at one end. It looks a bit large to be a personal sewing kit and I have no idea where I got it, although I believe it may have been inside something else I bought. Can anyone ID it? Dave66 Posted 8 October , 2023 Share Posted 8 October , 2023 (edited) Looks very much like a wash roll Chris, would have contained cutlery, razor and all those little personal bits n bobs….I can’t resist them if they are going cheaply, as most have a number that can be researched. https://talesfromthesupplydepot.blog/2021/01/07/british-army-washroll/ https://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/30016263 https://www.dearoldblighty.com/en-GB/all-items/1st-bn-essex-regiment-ww1-pattern-personal-kit-roll-/prod_15778 Dave. 4thGordons Posted 8 October , 2023 Author Share Posted 8 October , 2023 Thanks very much @Dave66 that saved me some time - very much appreciated. I shall set it aside and come back to it on a long winter evening to see if anything can be made of the number. Thanks Chris
