Kenjids Posted 6 October , 2023 Share Posted 6 October , 2023 Hello, i have this 1956 Zippo with some interesting engravings. My question is can someone help me explain. I know what Maj AH Smith, 19 May 56 stand for. But Rock of the marne has something to do with the first world war and the other engravings too but wat has the top engravings to do with the bottom engraving? Was he a soldier during ww1? What was his story?

Kenjids Posted 6 October , 2023 Author Share Posted 6 October , 2023 I know he was a major. I know what the rock of the marne is. But i want to know who he was en what his role was in the first world war. Or was he even in the war. I don’t know if that is possible to find if he was in the first world war or not
Dai Bach y Sowldiwr Posted 6 October , 2023 Share Posted 6 October , 2023 OK. There's a strong link to the US 3rd Infantry Division. Are you in the USA? Have you looked for US military records there?
Kenjids Posted 6 October , 2023 Author Share Posted 6 October , 2023 That’s the problem i live in Belgium. So i don’t know where to start looking for information. Is there a way to look in the records with the internet?
Dai Bach y Sowldiwr Posted 6 October , 2023 Share Posted 6 October , 2023 I believe that US Great War military service records were destroyed in a fire in around 1972. However, there are surviving draft cards and more at the US National Archives: https://www.archives.gov/research/genealogy/wwi
