It’s a WW2 badge for 12th Corps. He is an officer of Corps Artillery (Heavy Batteries RA). On operational duty he would wear battle dress, but he has dressed in his best, ‘Service Dress’ uniform (in the previous war used for combatant duty) - as used when walking out to socialise - presumably for this portrait photograph.
