Private Eric Lightening

In memory of 3056 Private Eric Charles Dalton Lightening D coy 2nd Regiment South African Infantry kia today in 1917 near Bremen redoubt.  My grand mother and Eric were great  great grandchildren of QMS James Lightening MSM of HM 9th Foot

@Ancre1917 FYI - SA dependants' pension claims were handled by the MoP In the UK

Pte. Eric Charles LIGHTENING, 3056, SAIthere are two pension index cards at WFA/Fold3 naming his mother Leonie Opal LIGHTENING of 20 Freguson Road, Durban [no quantum provided]

Thanks for this information M. I’ll add the address to the file. His father was a prison warder at one time and had a distinguished record during the 2nd Boer war with the Natal police & Steinaecker’s horse. He also served in the Great War in the SA medical corps. His brother Charles also served in the Boer war and in the Great War German South West Africa campaign. They were a military family.

I have the medals to Ernest Dalton Lightening, uncle to your man - his address was "Hlabisa", 20 Ferguson Road, Durban. Here is more about Eric
