David26 Posted 17 September , 2023 Share Posted 17 September , 2023 I am researching an RFA officer who transferred into the RFC: Lt Richard Fitton MC. I have found and downloaded his RFC/RAF service record from TNA (AIR 76/162/141) which has 4 pages (all images courtesy of The National Archives): As can be seen there are two mentions of a 2/Lt Roland Fitton on the first page and it appears that some of Roland Fitton's details may have crept into Richard Fitton's service record. So I also downloaded Roland Fitton's service record (AIR 76/162/140). It also comprises 4 pages (again images courtesy of TNA): I am not used to airmen's service records so am having some trouble disentangling these two. Is anyone able to help please? In case it helps, my current working assumptions are that: - Richard Fitton served as an observer in 34 and 38 Squadrons, being wounded accidentally on 28 March 1918 in Italy and was invalided to England on 16 April 1918; - after being invalided to England in April 1918, I can see no further operational deployments for Richard Fitton so assume he did not return to front line service; - the reference to being wounded in France on 4 May 1918 with 11 Squadron probably refers to Roland Fitton. Any pointers to help would be very gratefully received! David.
David26 Posted 18 September , 2023 Author Share Posted 18 September , 2023 Just to add, I've found some very useful additional information from casualty reports on the website airhistory.org.uk/rfc/files/names_combined_F.txt. It looks to me as if 2/Lt Roland Fitton was a pilot of Bristol F2b fighters in 11 Sqn in France and was wounded in combat, while Lt Richard Fitton was an observer in RE8s and F2bs in 34 Sqn in Italy and was wounded on a crashed landing.
