Can anyone unravel this for me? "Treg"? To what does it refer? It appears on the records of men numbered adjacent to the individual depicted, too.

Hi,

Could it be Trng - short for training Chris?

I read only Tng which would agree with Steve‘s suggestion of Training. A Training establishment would be the next natural step after the Recruit Depot before joining an operational unit.

It could be RNAS Depot "Tregantle" (HMS President II).

Certainly a possibility although, by May 1918 no longer PRESIDENT II, Tregantle and Withnoe Base having become an RAF unit. With numerous aircraft srtatic in storage, T&W, under RNAS command, had been much-used for initial technical training after recruit training at Crystal Palace.

It definitely looks like "Treg" to me, particularly the entry in the "Departure Authority" column.  Tregantle certainly seems like a logical suggestion.
