tomisitt Posted 13 September , 2023 Share Posted 13 September , 2023 A few photos from my most recent visit to the Italian Front. These are Austro-Hungarian trenches and barracks at Anderteralpe, the supply centre for their troops on the Sextener Rotwand in the Dolomites from April 1916 to November 1917. Life in these trenches was very cold. Temps as low as -35C were recorded here. Austrian troops and Russian PoW porters had to climb up more than 3000ft from here to their positions on the mountain top above. Unsurprisingly, these positions were plagued by avalanches, and the 35ft of snow that fell in the winter of 1916/17. Not everyone found it as exciting as I did.
