Remembered Today:

196th - any Headquarters near Bailleul in ww1? Possibly 96th Brigade RFA?

Hello everybody,

I am French and I live near Bailleul. The other day, I found an inscription, almost completely erased, on the wall of a farmhouse. We can still read 196th....entry.
What could it be?
Sincerely.

Thanks.

It looks like a notice pointing people towards the "Entrance" (the word directly above the arrow indicating a direction) of something relating to 196th - possibly a Headquarters?

We are going to need a better expert than me!

Can you give a more precise location of the building please?

I suppose it could ww1 or it might have been ww2 - expert needed.

I am going to edit the post title to try and bring in more experts.

I have downloaded the casualty list from the nearby Bailleul war cemetery.

No casualties listed in a unit numbered 196 but there are for 96th Battery AND Brigade Royal Field Artillery and 296 Railway Company,  All from ww1. None from ww2.

Now to find the relevant war diaries for the units mentioned...

I send you the location:

50.71507883062824, 2.7977546039560295

If you right click in TrenchMapper and choose Lat/Long Jump, those coordinates give 36.B.7.a.00.81, Mustard Farm.

Mustard farm was a name given by british troops?

Probably, there is nothing nearby to suggest a local name.

When I use Right click, then Lat/Lon Jump and add 50.61777471891139, 2.7495551529774014, I get Mustard Farm as in this image.

Is that where you live?
