RNCVR Posted 5 September Share Posted 5 September If you dont already have it, here is the CEF File for William GASTON --- Name: GASTON, WILLIAM Regimental Number: 177980 Date of Birth: 1896-02-16 Reference: RG 150, Accession 1992-93/166, Box 3436 - 63 Item Number: 410897 Record Group: Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) Digitized service file - PDF format: B3436-S063
stephen p nunn Posted 5 September Author Share Posted 5 September Thank you very much RNCVR. Yes, I had seen the CEF record, but thank you very much for responding about William. This is him: William (Willie) GASTON 16/2/1896 – born at Hawkesbury, Ontario, Canada. The son of James R. Gaston. Lived at Carlillon, Quebec, and was a sailor. 6/12/1915 – enlisted at Montreal, Quebec. Served with 1st Battalion, CEF. 1/7/1916 – At Kenora Camp (Flanders). 6/7/1916 – relieved 10th Battalion, CEF, in trenches. 9/7/1916 – KIA in trenches in the vicinity of Maple Copse; “intense bombardment…trenches were severely damaged…several dugouts buried…about 100 men killed or wounded…”.. Private Gaston “previously reported missing…together with several comrades was buried by shell fire…impossible to recover his body…”. His next of kin was Hasting Nowlan (uncle) of Carlillon, Quebec. Remembered on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial (Panel 10-26-28).
RNCVR Posted 5 September Share Posted 5 September His mother would likely have rec'd, in addition to a Memorial Plaque, the Canadian Silver Mother's Cross. I have not read thru all of his servcie docs to determine if she indeed did receive one or both. Perhaps you might have them in addition to his pair? RNCVR Posted 5 September Share Posted 5 September Both (including Scroll) were sent to his Foster Mother. Mrs Eliza Nowlan in Carillon Quebec. Sep 28, 1922(?) - the year on the date stamp is blurred so difficult to make out.
chaz Posted 5 September Share Posted 5 September regarding the "mothers" cross , as far as I remember there were two issued, one to the mother and one to the wife (where applicable), presumably if no wife, then a sister may qualify for the 2nd. after 2001 this was upped to 3 recipients , apparently to reflect todays world, !! RNCVR Posted 5 September Share Posted 5 September (edited) Yes, that is correct, but Will Gaston appears to have been unmarried & no family noted other than is foster mother. Presumably (but not necessarily) he was adopted at some point in his childhood. I dont know what the current regs are for the Canadian Mothers Cross.
