Old Tom Posted 12 April , 2005 Share Posted 12 April , 2005 Hello, I am trying to inform myself about various aspects of communiction. While I have read several book about RFC I have not come across anything dealing in detail with the major air task of reconaisance, in particular air photos and artillery direction. I gather radios were heavy and mostly not voice. Would appreciate a steer towards a book or web site. Old Tom
Dolphin Posted 12 April , 2005 Share Posted 12 April , 2005 Tom Have you looked at Peter Cooksley's The RFC/RNAS Handbook [iSBN 0 7509 2169 2]? There's an overview of both aerial photography and airborne wireless developments, which might help you. Regards Gareth
andigger Posted 6 May , 2005 Share Posted 6 May , 2005 This isn't WWI, but doing some local research I just came to find out that my town, Falls Church, was the first location subjected to coordinated artillery and aerial bombardment by US forces. In 1862 the Yankees used a ridge outside of town to run some balloons high enough to see what was going on in the center of town. Using flag signals from the balloons they directed the canons behind the ridge to place a few shells in the center of town. Our guys ran off, but typical for the Union army of the time they forget the critical step in winning a battle - occupying the territory you just chased the enemy from.
