A free Zoom talk: Two sides of the same coin: the Newfoundlanders and Maoris at Gallipoli Tuesday 19/9 at 1930

When the First World War broke out Newfoundland and Maoris enthusiastically signed up to serve. Many shared the same belief: that military service would bring favourable recognition to their country or people. Thinking they were going to fight the Germans, the first contingents served in Gallipoli instead. Ian and Vince will outline the political context, describe their experience in the campaign, analyse the impact of their service back home and discuss the importance of the memory of Gallipoli. Their talk will include biographies of Newfoundland and Maori soldiers, some of whom never returned.

Ian is a Trustee and education co-ordinator of the GA and a regular speaker. Vincent is a Canadian historian with a particular expertise in his country’s military history.
