Remembered Today:

Lieutenant Charles Randolph Waters - KOYLI

Strolling round Louth Cemetery in Lincolnshire the other day, I noticed this headstone for Charles Randolph (Ralphie) Waters.

It clearly states he was a Lieutenant in the KOYLI from 1915 to 1918

In Proud And

Loving Memory

of

Charles Randolph (Ralphie)

Waters

The Dearly Loved and Only Son Of

Charles and Maria E Waters

His date of death is given as 29th May 1918, but may have been a few days earlier, as the person who added the date also states that it could be the internment date.

And yet I can find no mention of him on the CWGC database.

If anyone can find anything on him, I would really appreciate it.

Can't find a match on CWGC. He died locally but he's not listed as a war grave at Louth Cemetery, the grave registration report forms show one struck out entry but it's not him (Sjt G T Brien, discharged 1909 if anyone is wondering). He's also not an open IFCP case.

This is his TNA file: https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C742227

Not seeing anything in the newspapers.

Ancestry reference for Fold3 I don't have access.

WILL Index gives death 25 May 1918.

Birth registration at GRO I would think

Name: Mother's Maiden Surname
WATERS, CHARLES  RANDOLPH   STARMER
GRO Reference: 1894  S Quarter in RICHMOND YORKSHIRE  Volume 09D  Page 622

This looks like his parents' marriage at FreeBMD

Starmer  Maria Elizabeth    Scarbro'  9d 639
Waters  Charles    Scarbro'  9d 639

As per the headstone and the Probate

Should help with Censuses

M

Edit: And locations along with probate address for newspaper searches

I got to see his file at TNA last weekend, this contained a copy of his DC:

P1267097.jpg.7b4817d8dc220e882d25b1096fda4a4e.jpg

Although his invaliding disability appears to have been "exophthalmic goitre", the cause of death was directly related to a fall at Alnwick Railway Station while on duty, 3 Dec 1916.

IFCP will put his case forward.

Cause of death seem to be various types of Sarcoma - forms of cancer.
