aconnolly Posted 25 August Share Posted 25 August Steve - never seen it in an NZEF record or reference either. Could it be a typo and meant to refer to petrol supply in the Div Train? Andrew
stevenbecker Posted 25 August Author Share Posted 25 August Mate, Yes thats what I thought it maybe a typo, but the record, his personal file, clearly shows Anzac Patrol Corps? There were many new units being formed for the AIF around at that time, but not a Patrol corps? The man around him with at that date, show either 1 LH Bde Supply Sect and or 1 LH Bde HQ His brother soldiers in the 1st Reinf are a mixed bag BADIOR Robert William 2754 Dvr 1 LH Bde Trn 1R (5Co AASC) (157) Tos NZ&A Div Trn 10-15 (G) rtn 12-15 att WFF 1-16 to 4 Div Base depot 5-16 to 4 ADBD Havre 8-16 to 14Co AASC 4 Div Trn 10-16 WIA 2-11-16 fractured fibular accident possibly during move to Vignacourt rtn 6-17 to hosp (VD) 8-17 rtn 11-17 T/att 4 DAC 11-17 att 4 Div Salvage Co 4-18 rtn 9-18 F&B RTA 1914 leave later WWII Pte 12Bn VDC (Q209477) CAVE Arthur 2755 Dvr 1 LH Bde Trn 1R (5Co AASC) (163) remain Egypt att WFF 1-16 to HQ/AASC Anzac MD 7-16 to ACo/CTC at Samalut 8-16 to HCo/CTC 8-16 to 4 LHTR 10-16 to AASC Trg depot Parkhouse UK 11-16 to 2 DSC 8-17 to 24 DSC 8-17 to AASC Base Depot Havre 8-17 to 26Co AASC 4 Div Trn 9-17 att HQ 4 Div Trn 3-18 rtn 6-18 F&B to 1914 leave in UK 11-18 disch in UK AKA Arthur Frederick Cave later WWII Pte 17Bn VDC (Q106887) CAVE James 2756 Dvr 1 LH Bde Trn 1R (5Co AASC) (162) (G) rtn rear Dtls Egypt 5-15 to hosp (VD) 8-15 rtn 10-15 to 4Co 1 Div Trn att Comp AASC att WFF 12-15 to 14Co 4 Div Trn 3-16 to hosp (influ - bronchitis) 6-16 rtn 7-16 to hosp (bronchits) 2-17 rtn 2-17 to hosp (rheum) 3-17 F&B to AIF depot (2 com) Hurdcott UK 4-17 to AASC Trg depot Parkhouse UK 8-17 to hosp (myalgia) 10-17 RTA MU cardiac disch 4-9-18 married Eunice Todd at Liverpool UK 11-6-17 HENDRY George 2757 Dvr 1 LH Bde Trn 1R (5Co AASC) (164) Tos 8-15 remain Egypt to hosp (mumps - influ) 2-16 rtn 3-16 att HQ AASC Anzac MD 4-16 to 8 MVS 5-16 to hosp (gastro) 5-17 to AAVC Dtls 7-17 rtn 8 MVS 8-17 to 36Co AASC Aust MDT 1-18 to hosp (malaria) 6-18 to AASC Trg unit 8-18 RTA 1914 leave LOWREY Francis Charles 2759 Dvr 1 LH Bde Trn 1R (5Co AASC) (156) Tos 10-15 att NZ&A Div Trn 10-15 rtn 12-15 (G) att WFF 2-16 to HQ ASC Anzac MDT 5-16 to hosp (epididymitis) 9-16 rtn 9-16 to ASC Trg depot 7-17 to hosp (adentitis) 8-17 rtn 8-17 to Cpl 38Co (998Co) AASC Aust MDT 8-17 RTA 1914 leave LARGE Alexander Harold 2760 Dvr 1 LH Bde Trn 1R (5Co AASC) (166) to 4Co 1 Div Trn att Comp AASC 12-15 to (15 BGH) hosp (enteric) 12-15 rtn 1-16 to 14Co AASC 3-16 to AASC Trg depot 5-16 to 4 ADBD Etaples 5-16 T/att AMTS Chelsea UK 8-16 to 1 Entr Bn 12-16 rtn 4Co 1 Div Trn 3-17 F&B to AIF depot (4 com) Codford UK 9-17 RTA MU debility disch 2-5-18 MU Ex 9Bn (856) DNE disch 5-9-14 MU (Boer War Cape Mounted Rifles (3060) 6 years) CALLOW Francis Robert 2764 Dvr 1 LH Bde Trn 1R (5Co AASC) (160) (G) rtn rear Dtls Egypt 5-15 att WFF 1-16 revert to Pte to 1 LH Bde Sup Sect 3-16 to 2 ADBD Etaples 6-16 to 16Co AASC 2 Div Trn 6-16 to Dvr 6-17 T/att 17Co 8-18 F&B RTA 1914 leave later WWII Pte 1 Garr Bn (Q186766) to L/Cpl 2/1 Forestry Co RAE in UK (QX7244) HAWES Edwin George 2765 LCpl Dvr 1 LH Bde Trn 1R (5Co AASC) to A Troop BSqn/01 LHR (662) 4-15 (P) to T/Cpl (from kelly or Kiley WIA) 8-15 revert 8-15 to T/Cpl (from ward) 8-15 to hosp (1 LHFA) (dysentry) 9-15 rtn 9-15 revert to L/Cpl Mudros 11-15 (G) to Cpl (from mcgregor) 1-16 att WFF to L/Sgt (from kingsford) 8-16 revert 9-16 to T/L/Sgt (from kingsford) 2-17 to T/Sgt (from young) 6-17 revert 7-17 to L/Sgt (from kingsford) to T/Sgt (from mitchell) 11-17 to Sgt 1 LHTR 1-18 rtn 5-18 T/att (Gas course) Div Gas school Richon 8-18 to hosp (carbuncle) 9-18 RTA 1914 leave disch 24-1-19 (Boer War ASqn/NSWMR) (D Troop ASqn/1 LH (Central Qld) CMF 12 years later WWII Pte 14 Garr Bn/1 Garr Bn (Q90904) HART Daniel Edmund 2766 Dvr 1 LH Bde Trn 1R (5Co AASC) (159?) michaeldr Posted 28 August Share Posted 28 August This is a long-shot, but … … both Walker & Swasbrick were drivers and transferred to the Anzac Patrol Corps in April 1916: so, is there any chance that in April 1916 when a new unit was being set up, there was an element of confusion over its name to be used in the records? I thinking here of the Light Car Patrols formed in March 1916 by Lynden-Bell which Ian Alexander mentions at https://www.greatwarforum.org/topic/240603-lamb-lcp-units/ and which Australians joined shortly after the original Yeomanry formation
stevenbecker Posted 28 August Author Share Posted 28 August Yes I was looking at a number of options like the Provo Corps and Postal Corps that was also increasing at that time. But there files are clearly Aust Patrol Corps? aconnolly Posted 29 August Share Posted 29 August There is a reference in Rolls, "Steel Chariots of the Desert" to Australians accompanying him on an expedition to Wadi Saal in the Western Desert in mid 1916. It's literally a single sentence but might well support Michael's point above.
stevenbecker Posted 29 August Author Share Posted 29 August Mate, Yes you had me chasing my copy of Roll's book to double check. While he may say that, he was refering to the Aussie Troops station around his unit, not the then Aust Armoured Car Section that hadn't arrived as yet. There were a number of Camel Corps Companies that co-op with the British Armoured Cars in many of the Oasis along the Western Front around then As well as the 1 LH Bde group of units including the 5Co AASC 1 LH Bde Train. The ALCP came into being in Dec 1916 changing its name from the Arm Car Sect But all ideas are welcome to check on. S.B
aconnolly Posted 29 August Share Posted 29 August (edited) Steve - does this help? Gullett in offical history of AIF VOL VII , chapter 5 regarding the return of the Light Horsemen from Gallipoli states: "The 4th Regiment was reduced to two squadrons, one of which together with the whole of the 13th Regiment was sent to as corps mounted troops to France, while the remaining squadron was for a time attached to an Imperial Service brigade doing special patrol duty against Turkish spies and agents upon the Egyptian side of the canal. The 11th (Queensland and South Australia) and 12th (New South Wales) Regiments served until early 1917 as detached units" Andrew Edited 29 August by aconnolly typo
stevenbecker Posted 29 August Author Share Posted 29 August Interesting, Both Regts were in limbo following there return from Anzac. The 4 LH Bde had been disbanded and they had no Bde HQ and were attached to other Bdes for admin. Both Regts by April still had not received all there horses and the ones they had were being swapped between Sqns to carry out duties, like escorts The 12 LHR moved to No 2 Osis camp at Helepolis in April, while the 11 LHR was moved to Tel el Kebir From these areas they were broken up into work parties, as no one wanted them Both War Dairies don't mention any thing like a Aust Patrol Corps, or Special Patrol duty looking for spies, at lest during March and April 1916
