Remembering 435684 L/Cpl Henry Louis NORWEST, MM and Bar, Scout/Sniper, 50th Battalion, Canadian Infantry (the Alberta Regiment).

Killed in action 18th August 1918. Buried Warvillers Churchyard Extension Grave A30.

A member of thé Métis / Cree nation. 115 kills.

Thé fleur de lys was the trade badge of scout snipers, like the hammer and tongs for a farrier.

Not normally worn on combat uniforms as this would show the enemy their speciality if captured, which often led to summary execution.

That makes sense, as there wasn’t a crossed rifles with S above badge for snipers until later (post war) if I recall correctly.  The fleur de lys badge was also awarded to those with scout (reconnaissance and use of ground) training excluding sniping though, so it wasn’t completely clear cut.
