Training Schools

If an officer was sent to a specialist training school (eg Lewis Gun) whilst on active duty in France would he be required to remain on site outside the tuition hours during his time there?

Hi Ted,

There may be exceptions, but on the whole, no. Max Plowman (Mark VII) records fond memories of an enjoyable social life during a training course in 'A Subaltern on the Somme'. It's sometimes stated in diaries and memoirs that the growth of schools in 1915 was at least partly to provide a constructive break from trench routine.

All the best,

Richard

If you mean could he socialise in the evenings I agree with Old Forge.  There was not the expectation at that time that officer students must be spending their evenings revising their daytime studies.
