Sergeant David Ogilvy Martin, 1531 4/5 Black Watch: Strange entry in Registers of Soldiers' Effects.

David O Martin was killed in the Beaumont Hamel area on 3 September 1916. He was officially missing for some considerable time.

In 1914 he made a soldier's will leaving everything to his mother:

The payments shown in the Registers of Soldier's Effects are therefore made to his mother as sole legatee:

However the RSE seems to give the mother's name as Grace R. David's mother's name was Jane (usually given as Jeanie, sometimes Jean) and she was certainly still alive. (the R might be right as she was Jane (Jeanie) Robbie.) She had no other forename.

The Pension Card gets the mother's name correct:

I can only think that the entry in RSE is a clerical error. But have I missed something?
