seaJane Posted 15 August , 2023 Share Posted 15 August , 2023 I've just noticed this inscription in one of my books. Is she any relation to the General? @IanA?

seaJane Posted 15 August , 2023 Author Share Posted 15 August , 2023 (edited) 2 hours ago, DavidOwen said: Maybe this is your lady? Looks very likely! Quarter of a century later ... The book is set in the Scottish Borders (whence its author also hailed) which made me wonder particularly about General Haig - whose mother I see was called Rachel. But this cannot be her. Sister? Cousin? Answered my own question: niece - links to follow. Edited 15 August , 2023 by seaJane
seaJane Posted 15 August , 2023 Author Share Posted 15 August , 2023 (edited) https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/255616046/rachel-winifred-haig - included on her father the Rev William Henry Haig's gravestone in Edinburgh. https://www.geni.com/people/Rev-William-Henry-Haig/6000000013532694323 - father's family links. Now to work out which aunt - Haig or Vivian - gave her the book ... Janet Stein Haig? The inscription looks like Aunt Jenty, and Alexandra Mary Freesia and Violet Mary (the Vivians) don't seem likely origins of that. IanA Posted 16 August , 2023 Share Posted 16 August , 2023 Complicated, but I think I've got it. Douglas was the youngest son (b1861) of John Haig and Rachel Veitch. Rachel Winifred Haig was the daughter of William Henry (b1841) second son of John and Rachel. RWH was therefore a first cousin of Douglas. Her father, WHH, was General Secretary to the Distillers' Company and died when Rachel was a toddler.
