tankengine888 Posted 10 August , 2023 Share Posted 10 August , 2023 I recently have picked up a Field Service Pocket Book. Inside on the first page there is a signature. Below is the signature. Now, it reads 'A Neve??? Capt - 2nd Pioneer Batt AIF'. I did do a search and found a man; Captain Alfred Douglas Nevien MC MiD [Below are awards]https://www.awm.gov.au/collection/R1538208https://www.awm.gov.au/collection/R1538209 I am quite indecisive on this, and I ask fellow forum members whether they think the signature in the pocket book correlates to Captain Nevien.Above is Captain Nevien's signature per record. WhiteStarLine Posted 10 August , 2023 Share Posted 10 August , 2023 Would be astonished if wasn't him. Oops, hang on, I wonder if the first image was someone else labelling it? The surname is spelled Nevein and the one below is spelled Nevien. They seem to be in subtly different writing styles too. In the AIF record below he is referred to Nevien and his wife as Nevein, so perhaps one of these names that no one ever got right! However, they're clearly the same name. The last letter of his name in example 1 is clearly an 'n' and the last letter in his rather florid signature in example 2 looks like the letter 'r' with a very striking downward run. tankengine888 Posted 10 August , 2023 Author Share Posted 10 August , 2023 Thanks WSL, For me, it's good to have a 'back up' to confirm just as an assurance. There's a few nicks in the pages and a few notes [The 'nicks' are rips in the pages from the middle of the page.. notes are attached] Turns out that Nevein/Nevien ended up a Major in the RAE {MC, VD}. I was trying to find a good picture of him, however I think I'll settle with this. Zidane. [Also a question on the notes; I can read 'Gym' and 'Sheets' but I cannot read the underlined title on the top left and bottom right.

tankengine888 Posted 10 August , 2023 Author Share Posted 10 August , 2023 Thanks lads, A standing derrick eh? I'll buy that, it sounds about right. From what I gather, the Derricks are for swinging and moving items, like a crane but it's operated by soldiers. Perhaps a war diary might mention the Swinging Derrick.. one might be lucky! Having a thought.. if he is listed as a Captain without a decoration in the book [date of Captaincy Dec 1916].. then this book was issued to Nevein in 1917? Zidane.
