Hello

I would like to identify more precisely the rank of

that soldier:

http://perso.wanadoo.fr/tanneguy.desplanqu...lery%20rang.htm

The rank indicated is ART CER WO II .

WO CL II is clear => Warrant officer class 2, but ART CER ?

ARTILLERY CERTIFIED ? in this case seems close to Master Gunner rank.

The CWGC database indicates following:

Name: MAHONY, BERNARD

Initials: B

Nationality: Australian

Rank: Leading Fireman

Regiment: Australian Field Artillery

Unit Text: 13th Bde.

Age: 37

Date of Death: 07/08/1917

Service No: 4186

Additional information: Son of Michael and Henrietta Mahony. Native of Armidale, New South Wales.

Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead

Grave/Memorial Reference: VIII. D. 5.

Cemetery: VLAMERTINGHE NEW MILITARY CEMETERY

Leading Fireman also not a current title !

does anybody know some details about this rank ART. CER. ?

Regards

The rank is 'Artificer' as given in the original CWGC register for that cemetery.

The 'fireman' bit is an error which I shall report for correction.

Many thanks.

But Artificier is still an uncommon rank .

I do not see it in the usual ranks list

Do you have some details about it ?

Gunner, Bombardier then Artificier ? is it orrect ?

CWGC corrected the rank to Artificer (W.O.II) this morning but it will not show up on the internet until the next update.

Artificer is uncommon but it does exist in army ranks (though more commonly found in the navy).

I believe it is a 'trade' rather than a rank.

An artificer is essentially a mechanic. The dictionary definition is...

1) A skilled worker; a craftsperson.

2) One that contrives, devises, or constructs something: “The labyrinth . . . was built by Daedalus, a most skillful artificer” (Thomas Bulfinch).
