Spaceman Posted 9 August , 2023 Share Posted 9 August , 2023 Shell case for Ordnance QF 4.5-Inch Howitzer from 1917 filled just once with Cordite (CF) and made at the Royal Laboratory at Woolwich Arsenal. This is a Mk I cartridge case (2.75" long). The Mk II was slightly longer.
peregrinvs Posted 9 August , 2023 Share Posted 9 August , 2023 I think that’s been made from a cartridge case for a QF 3.7 inch mountain howitzer: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QF_3.7-inch_mountain_howitzer A measurement of the width of the base would confirm it. Spaceman Posted 10 August , 2023 Share Posted 10 August , 2023 (edited) Looking at the scale drawings, the length of both the QF 3.7" Howitzer Mk I and Mk II cartridge cases look to about the same at ~3.7" +/- 0.1". I think the brass case was the same in both cases and it may only have been the design of the charge increments that was different. To help those who know much better than me to help you - it might help all if you could please measure and show 1) the length/height and 2) the diameter of the other/open end. Just a thought.
