RockRash Posted 9 August , 2023 Share Posted 9 August , 2023 Hello all, I found this forum while trying to look up information on an Enfield I recently picked up. From what I've read here its likely a Indian refinished rifle due the the markings on the left side receiver band. There are no markings on the right side receiver band which seems strange. In my haste to take it down to clean it I forgot to take pictures of the complete rifle but I did take lots of pictures of the stamping. Any information would be helpful. RockRash Posted 9 August , 2023 Author Share Posted 9 August , 2023 It had been sitting in a closet for 25 years before I got to it. The bolt face and barrel was full of dust and dirt. It needs a good cleaning but otherwise seems to be in good condition.
4thGordons Posted 9 August , 2023 Share Posted 9 August , 2023 (edited) Yes it is an Indian refinish from 1950 (FR ´50) I can’t tell when the original rifle was produced, but if I had to guess based on the stampings and general features I would say it was a WWII vintage rifle originally. It has a number of differences ( largely cosmetic) from a WWI rifle Forend reinforcing strap at rear (like used on No4 rifles) and squared off front sight protectors ( without a piling swivel mount) You don’t show it but I suspect it will also have a simple, symmetrical rear sight protector, Note: post war Indian rifles were the only ones to use Arabic numbers for the Mk so this is stamped Mk3 *. ( rather than Mk III*) Rifle looks to be in nice shape and matching but probably a little late for this forum although it show how the type evolved and is useful for comparison Hope that helps Chris Edited 9 August , 2023 by 4thGordons correcting phone induced typos!
