W J Ward

In Loving Memory, of Private William John Ward of the 1/5th Gordon Highlanders. Killed in Action, 31st July 1917, on the opening day of the battle of Passchendaele.

Aged 38, he was Killed advancing with the 51st Highland Division at Pilckem Ridge, being buried in Pilckem Road Cemetery.

William was from Bridge of Weir, Renfrewshire, and left a widow and 6 children (his youngest being nearly 2yrs). He is listed on the Chryston War Memorial - where he resided before the war.

W J Ward was reburied in 1920 in New Irish Farm Cemetery, along with the 17 other 5th Gordons buried at Pilckem Road Cemetery.

Rest in peace. He likely served with my great uncle who was killed eight weeks later with 1/5th Gordons.
