Engineers, R.N. Div., Royal Marines who died 29/07/1915 SKEW BRIDGE CEMETERY Turkey His record shows that he was born in Croydon, Surrey, and at the time of his enlistment (22nd October 1914) he was working as an architect and surveyor. The Directory of British Architects 1834-1914 has the following:- Henman, Charles Henry Rowed, 1878-1915 Date of birth: Dec 1878 Date of death: 29 July 1915 Place of death: Dardanelles, Turkey Address: 80 Pall Mall, London SW, England (1911) 65 Telford Avenue, Streatham Hill, London SW (1911) 45 Osmond Gardens, Wallington, Surrey (1914) Education and training: Educated at Whitgift Grammar School, Croydon. Articled to Charles Henman (1845-1940) 1897-1900, and remained as assistant 1901-02. AA classes. Assistant to Messrs Henman & Cooper (William Henman (1846-1917) & Thomas Cooper (b. 1847)) 1903, and in War Office Architects' Department from 1904, including a posting to Bermuda. Professional qualifications: LRIBA 27 Feb 1911: proposed by C Henman, W Henman, L W Ridge. Personal details: Son of C Henman. Nephew of W Henman. Killed in action. Obituaries: RIBA Journal v23, Nov 1915, p8, 31 References: Who's who in architecture (1914) Portraits: RIBA Journal v23, 20 Nov 1915, p25 His record shows that after enlisting he quickly found his niche and rose through the ranks thus:- 2nd Cpl - 3rd November 1914 Sergt. - 5th December 1914 Q.M.S. - 19th December 1914 He is also remembered at the AWM - https://www.awm.gov.au/collection/R1430495 This is probably explained by the CWGC entry which gives “husband of Mabel Henman (nee Heathcote), of The Cottage, Neale's Avenue, Fairfield, Sydney, New South Wales.” The original schedule of burials shows slightly different details to those currently recorded by the CWGC ; ie.
