Mortuary Attendant

Hi, I have a photo of my grandmother dressed in what appears a dark uniform and hat with an armband that states Mortuary Attendant. I can only summise this had something to do with civilian casualties and possibly a role a woman might be expected to help with

Can anyone help

More likely to be part of the widespread recruitment of women to perform jobs usually until then, carried on by men. This all due to the recruitment of those men into the armed forces.

Influenza pandemic comes to mind. Not that I can authenticate that with anything : it’s the first reaction I had to the question.
