b3rn Posted 15 July , 2023 Share Posted 15 July , 2023 Extensive works were undertaken by the French army from 1918 to 1930 to honour their First World War dead at the Dardanelles. We've tried to match period photographs and maps with written reports to understand what was built, and to match these to physical remains on the ground. https://sites.google.com/norestforthewicked.net/french-commemoration-gallipoli/
Hedley Malloch Posted 15 July , 2023 Share Posted 15 July , 2023 Buried in the French Consular Cemetery in Gelibolu town are some French PoWs who died in Turkish care. They are buried in a marked common grave. From memory, they were all Senegalese Tirailleurs.
b3rn Posted 18 July , 2023 Author Share Posted 18 July , 2023 (edited) Hi Hedley, thanks for reminding us of Gelibolu. I've added that cemetery to the list. That cemetery has graves from the Crimean War, plus some of the Levantine community of Gelibolu. There is a memorial to 11 Senegalese who died 1919-1923, and the named grave of an officer, captain Paul BOUTONNET, Infanterie Coloniale, 1 November 1922. I've attached a photo of the former to this reply. Edited 18 July , 2023 by b3rn
