Daniel DUFOUR Posted 14 July , 2023 Share Posted 14 July , 2023 (edited) Death Mill area near St. Julian is called Marine View on some military maps. Does anyone know why? Edited 14 July , 2023 by Daniel DUFOUR Typo
mebu Posted 17 July , 2023 Share Posted 17 July , 2023 Daniel, I think the fact that nobody has replied means that no-one knows. After all the obvious names such as streets, towns, people and map letters had been used for trenches, farms and buildings such as mills, it seems that names could be given for any reason whatsoever: a chance remark, an occurrence, a similarity, or perceived similarity, to something someone had seen. Sometimes by someone at the location, or sometimes by a cartographer in the map printing room. The origin of millions of names will never be known. Daniel DUFOUR Posted 17 July , 2023 Author Share Posted 17 July , 2023 Hey Peter, I suppose you must be right. At first, I thought the general silence could have been blamed on summer time. Best, Daniel.
