jay dubaya Posted 11 July , 2023 Share Posted 11 July , 2023 Anyone able to offer any ideas on what these wheels are off? Copied from a FB post, claimed to have been found in German / Hungarian trenches in Bukowina, Romania. Dimensions given as 500mm H x 60mm W and 120mm cutouts. Andrew Upton Posted 11 July , 2023 Share Posted 11 July , 2023 According to: https://www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/pinterest--377317275001450707/ "GERMAN ARTILLERY ON THE WESTERN FRONT. Q 157. German trench mortar. (3-inch with recoil gear). Ammunition box on rear of base plate."
jay dubaya Posted 11 July , 2023 Author Share Posted 11 July , 2023 Thanks for the replies folks. I initially thought WW2 and a friend has said cable reels from the Flak 88, which may make more sense as the wheels don’t look as if they would support much weight. I don’t know the area they were found so don’t know if the location was manned during the later conflict.
jay dubaya Posted 11 July , 2023 Author Share Posted 11 July , 2023 Just now, Andrew Upton said: According to: https://www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/pinterest--377317275001450707/ "GERMAN ARTILLERY ON THE WESTERN FRONT. AOK4 Posted 11 July , 2023 Share Posted 11 July , 2023 I thought I had seen that kind of wheels on Minenwerfer before as well, but couldn't immediately find an example, so I then thought they they might be WW2. Anyway, this picture shows that my first thought may very well be possible.
bierast Posted 12 July , 2023 Share Posted 12 July , 2023 I definitely think these are from a (leichte) Minenwerfer. Significantly, these would be removed when the weapon was emplaced - so they could easily end up separated from the weapon and dug up apart from it. jay dubaya Posted 12 July , 2023 Author Share Posted 12 July , 2023 Well that clinches it, thanks folks, the input is greatly appreciated. The above images clearly show very similar if not identical wheels complete with quick release pin. It also great to see the piece with its crew. I’ll share this information and come back with anything more that can be offered on the find.
